sonja herpich // stranger things

The Munich-based photo artist Sonja Herpich (b. 1979) became known to a wider audience for her long-term project “half kitchen”, for which she photographed herself as an Oktoberfest waitress before and after work. At the center of this retrospective is her most recent and extensive series “hide and seek” (2017), which was created during several stays in California: She doesn’t portray the glittering megacities and tourist highlights, but rather dedicates herself to hidden places full of intimacy, as well as indulging in unnoticed situations. The exhibition, which comprises a total of 19 fine art prints, will be supplemented by works from the series “future_present_past” (2012) and “at night it is colder than outside” (2011/2012).

VERENA FRENSCH | IMPULSES

Using this exhibition title, the Munich artist programmatically describes the discussion surrounding our understanding of models of sender and receiver and the dysfunctionality of our systems of reference in general. It’s that civilization-critical access which combines the four photo series „The Message“ (2014/17), „Significance“ (2016), „I am here, awaiting“ (2006/16) and „Retable 2012“ (2012), presented by the Gallery for Contemporary Photography at the start of the collaboration with the legal practice Widenmayer, Munich.
